I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m lame. Hell, I’ve built my blog around that fact. However, I do still have SOME pride…and I’m about to chip away at that useless emotion by revealing to you some of my guilty pleasure songs.
I’ll share these with you, but we must never speak of it again, okay?
All By Myself – cover by Jamie O’Neal
Dude, I just…..I don’t wanna talk about it. Moving on…
Water from the Moon – Celine Dion
I maybe might have owned all of Celine Dion’s albums (on tape) up until 1998. It’s…it is what it is, OKAY?
Wuthering Heights – Kate Bush
Some people HATE this song. Kate’s soprano is a bit jarring and sharp, the song is about people who were actually kind of douchey and if you haven’t read Wuthering Heights it can make you feel stupid because the song is smarter than you.
But to a overly romantic 14 year old, this might be the most beautiful song ever. Even hearing it brings me back to sitting on my daybed, hugging my worn teddy bear and sighing about darkly handsome orphan Gypsies…
I’ll Be Over You – Toto (featuring the immutable Michael McDonald)
Everyone has a Toto song they secretly love. If you don’t you just haven’t heard it yet.
Bed of Roses – Bon Jovi
I’m not ashamed of my Bon Jovi love. I’m not. I Jumped Rope for Heart to Livin’ on a Prayer, I’ve banged on steering wheels to Shot Through the Heart and I’ve drunkenly sang Blaze of Glory in bars and shed a tear for poor Billy. But 90’s Bon Jovi…as cute as he was when he cut his hair, it’s just not cool.
But I do love this song, only because when was the last time that you woke up and french kissed the morning?
HUH?
Deep, Jon, deep.
Shadows of the Night – Pat Benatar
You can pretend like you’re not going to go home later today and play this full blast while singing into a hairbrush, but I know the truth. No, no, it’s cool. It’ll be our little secret….
******
Alright, moppets. Gimme your guilty pleasure songs. Don’t leave me the only one with my slip showin’…
There is no shame about the Celine Dion albums. I did too. The woman can sing!
I think I’d be less ashamed if she wasn’t such a goober. I can’t watch her sing, I get embarassed for her.
But if you like her voice, you should look up Lara Fabian. She sounds a LOT like Celine Dion and her song “Adagio” is one of my power ballad favorites.
One time I sat in a grocery store parking lot for half an hour listening to Madonna’s “Power of Goodbye” on repeat. Wasn’t even in the middle of a breakup, just feeling pouty. Also Katy Perry. All of it. Yeesh.
Did you lean on the steering column and stare at the odometer like it had the answers?
Been there…
I’m majorly outing myself here, but I was a huge Hanson fan. I guess I still am a huge Hanson fan. I’ve got all their CD’s, I think all their music is great, and I may still one day marry Taylor.*
I once got majorly busted jammin’ to “Mmmm-Bop” at a stop light. But HOW CAN YOU NOT?
i also continue to be a huge Hanson fan. i will happily own it. i saw them in concert earlier this year in London and will be seeing them again (how lucky are we??) at the end of this very month. and i am taking the whole next day off work to revel in listening to the albums again and again.
i haven’t told a lot of RL people that last part…
I’m going to come out and say it…I love me some Britney Spears! There’s nothing like driving home from work and signing her songs at the top of my lungs when I’m feeling sassy.
I’m not sure how I can love Tom Waits so much…and then turn around and listen to Brit Brit. I’m chalking it up to being female, and my hormones, and emotions and stuff like that.
It’s brain candy. You gotta have your music for your moods. You can’t have caviar and imported cheese all the time, sometimes you just want a G-D bag of Cheetos.
Re: All By Myself – have you seen the Tenth Doctor Musical on YouTube that features this song? Freaking hilarious. I especially love “I’m a chav!” and all of Captain Jack.

DEVIL WOMAN! I can’t listen to this right now, but you can bet your sweet bippy that I’ll be playing it in the car on my phone when I’m supposed to be heading to lunch…. Oh Jack….*swoon*
Did you watch the American Torchwood?? I want your thoughts….
Haha, you’ll have to tell me what you think! I haven’t seen American Torchwood yet…I need to figure out how to watch it.
THIS WAS AMAZING!! Remind me to write a post about my love for fan videos…Buffy ones especially. (It’s embarrassing.)
Torchwood is the only reason we kept Encore all summer; I HAD to see how it ended. Let me know when you do, I’m curious to see what you think…
I hadn’t seen it before you linked and now I’ve seen it three times AND linked to it on FB.
Either I hate you or I love you, Ali.
Thank you, either way.
New Kids on the Block.
I have all the cassettes, and many are a little screechy from being overplayed.
If I had them on CD, I’d still play them.
Please don’t tempt me!
You know, I actually HATED New Kids. No idea why, my friend Chantal adored them, but it was NOT my thing.
Can we still be friends? 🙂
Since you love me despite my lack of a sweet tooth, I will love you despite your hatred of possibly the best boy-band ever.
🙂
Oh, and Toto is not a guilty pleasure. There’s nothing wrong with that song. I said so; it must be true.
So, I’m not really sure if this counts, cause I know a lot of people love them some Beyonce, but see, I’m not really a huge pop music fan. Not a snob, really, it just doesn’t do it for me in general. But Beyonce…DAAAAAAMMMMMN, girl!
What got me started were some mashups that the mister has. One is the lyrics from “Bootylicious” over Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”…it’s called “Smells Like Booty”. MmHmm, yeah.
Sounds kind of nuts, but it totally works, and I am convinced that it is possibly the best dance song ever. We’re totally playing at our wedding reception. It will be epic.
Wow, that Toto song sent images of pretty much any 80’s teen love struck movie flashing through my mind. And Bon Jovi?! Reminds me of high school… my friend has the craziest Bon Jovi groupie story ever, promised her I’d never tell but boy do I want to…. lol
