So, it clashes with the geek girl image that I like to cultivate, but I don’t like web-series or online TV.
No, seriously, I don’t.
I think it’s because I haven’t fully given over to my computer as my TV of the future. I still like plopping in front of the boob tube, with a remote in hand, beer in the other and too many channels to even contemplate at my fingertips. (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone, “We HAVE that channel?!?” while surfing around. We’re ridiculous.)
So when I heard that my friends Jessica, Candis and Lydnsey were putting together a web-series, I was all “Eeeeee!” on the outside for them, but “ehhh..” on the inside. Because I knew I’d have to watch it on my computer. Sure, I could move the laptop to the couch, but it just wouldn’t be the same.
Again, ridiculous.
There’s also the chance that it might suck. I mean, yeah, these ladies were some of the most talented that I went to college with, so it was a really slim chance, but even hall-of-famers strike out, ya know? Then I’d have to do the “No, no, it’s good! Yeah, I reeeeeaaaallly liked it! No, it’s good!” dance over the phone and email. And that’s just embarrassing.
But…I watched it. And it was good. Like REALLY good. Funny, fun and a little nutty. Just like those ladies.
Awkward Embraces tells the tale of Jessica and her friends Candis and Lydnsey (see what they did there?) as they navigate dating. And not just dating, dating while a geek. A hot geek, but a geek nonetheless. From Jessica trying to teach Candis how to say “bat’leth” (if you know what that is, I love you) to Lyndsey having to exit a party because “that guys I’ve been talking to all night is into stuff I’m not comfortable with. Like poop stuff,” it’s ridiculously funny and real. All those mortifying moments that make you want to hide in the closet with a bucket of Ben & Jerry’s and a phone to call your buddies for comfort, all those moments are played out on your screen. I’ve hollered, “AHH! Noooo!” more than a few times while watching Awkward Embraces. And I’ve laughed. A LOT.
And if you want real, you can really submit your own awkward dating stories to be read on-air by the cast. It’s hilarious. Yes, I submitted. No, I won’t tell you which one.
And here’s the thing. I need to get over my web-series aversion. Because those people are the ones we should be supporting. Because the cast and crew of Awkward Embraces are out there and they’re DOING IT. They’re not talking about getting a break or starting a business or one day doing something they love. They are out there making it happen. That’s something that we talk about on A Practical Wedding, supporting people doing amazing things. Especially women because we are STILL behind, goddammit.
But don’t just support/watch these funny and amazing women because they are women. Watch and donate and support them because they are damn good at what they do.
And seriously funny.
Don’t believe me? Fine. Watch my favorite episode.
Now go here and watch it all from the beginning. And once you’re done, check out the teaser trailer for Season 2.
And if you’re so inclined, donate. There are gifts involved at certain donation levels. Everyone loves prezzies. (and if you don’t you’re a Communist.)
oh my gosh. one of my friends has the Best dating stories. she must submit one for this! thanks for sharing this though, I never knew this kind of thing even existed. Generally I am for tv-on-tv only, but recently I’ve been ok with watching old seasons of Battlestar Galactica on netflix so. I think I can get behind something like this. and you’re right, these really are the people I’d rather be supporting!
I love these ladies and have known them for years, but I still get wrapped up in the storylines.
And DEFINITELY have her submit! Their commentary makes good dating stories all the better. It’s hysterical…
That episode is hilarious. I’m definitely going to check this out further. I love at the very end of the episode when the one girl said, “Make it a double.” I died.
I know! And when Candis can’t give a ride to Lydnsey, but still wants to go because she wants to know what happened, I’ve so been there…
The “poop stuff” line made me pee the first time I saw it! God bless these girls.
I went through three episodes to find that line. I love it.
Aaaand bookmarked. This was exactly what I needed in my life.
