And so it begins…

Hi, my name is Alyssa. I say “Seriously?” and “Really?” too often, I love baking and books and I am…kind of a mess.

I envy people whose lives are put together, because mine never is.   And I’m not just talking about the Martha Stewart organizational Nazis… I especially envy the fun, indie bloggers who can take some rick-rack, four tin cans, feathers and a glue gun and suddenly turn a blah bedroom into a work of art.

I’m caught in the middle, too boring to be cool and too thrown together to be sophisticated. In general, I’m just…a mess. No matter how much I try to be cool, I just look awkward; and no matter how hard I try to look put-together, something will be falling down or poking out.
The reason I started this blog is I’ve accepted it.  I am not only kind of a mess, I am a Messy Girl.

And that’s who this blog is for. The Messy Girls.

The ones whose achievements fall short of either Crowning Glories or Epic Fails.

We will try a recipe on a whim and have it turn out great, but that same recipe will catch fire when we try to re-create it for our in-laws.

We love the smokey eye look, but are handed domestic violence pamphlets when we attempt it in public.

We get hit on by hot guys, but ruin it by cracking a Star Trek joke.

We spend months trying to make loving, well-crafted gifts for our friends and family every year, and every year we end up going out at 2am the night before in our PJ’s and buying gift cards.

Rarely will anything we do be perfect, and when it is we have to run for the camera because our loved ones will never believe it.

And that’s okay.

Because although our lives aren’t perfect, they are lived with love and come with a great story and that’s okay too.

Think of Kind of a Mess as your support group.  I’ll be showing a little bit of crafty stuff, a little bit of cooking stuff, lots of fun things and hopefully funny thoughts. I’ll also be highlighting fabulous women; not only fellow Messy Girls, but those that I envy.  Both are my inspiration and my aspiration – there’s no hate here.  (okay, maybe a little.  But for seriously awful things, like jeggings.  And bad tippers.)

So, welcome, Messy Girls!

We are not fit for company, and we LIKE it.

As someone who’s just learning to cook (and is married to a culinary genius who can’t keep his big mouth shut haha) I’m totally looking forward to this. 🙂

I also own a pair of jeggings. In fact, I’m wearing them right now. Oops.

    Pretend you didn’t hear that.

Ha, I just wish I could get the recipe to come out well the FIRST time.

I did make a killer green bean casserole, a la Alton Brown (you make your own cream of mushroom soup from fresh ingredients). But that, my friends, is the exception to the rule. 🙂

Right when I read “We are not fit for company…” I caught a glimpse of my glassy-eyed stare in my laptop screen. Mouth agape, hair falling out of my pony, and a posture that would make a troll wince. So, yes….very not fit for company. But hey, my manicure looks GREAT!
